Newlands placed hydrogen as the first element in the first period (or octave) because it has the lowest atomic weight of all the elements. Newland's octave law is al follows:
- This rule said that as one travelled from left to right within a group, the atomic weight increased by a factor of roughly 8. It also stated that elements in the same group (or octave) have similar chemical and physical properties.
- Similar to how musical notes recur in octaves, Newlands thought that this arrangement represented a periodic pattern in the properties of the elements.
- He reasoned that the properties of unidentified elements might be predicted using this periodic pattern. The growth of our knowledge of the elements and their properties was aided by Newlands' law of octaves, even if it was later discovered to be wrong and eventually replaced by the modern day periodic table.
