In the 19th century India, women continued wearing traditional Indian dress even if men had adopted more convenient western clothes. This shows that Women during 19th century were oppressed and had lower status than men in society. There never got a chance to be aware of what was going on outside the house and their lives were limited to the four walls of their homes. They were not allowed to become modern or change the traditions. Social evils like purdah were still in practice.

Women in the 19th century India were obliged to continue wearing traditional Indian dress even when men switched over to more convenient western clothes. This clearly shows that women during that time were accorded a lower status than men in society. They were not allowed to be aware of what was going on outside the house and were confined within the four walls of their homes. Modernity and change were not for them.

The changes in women’s dresses in the Western society were mainly affected by practical considerations at the workplace. In India, majority of women still are housewives and the percentage of working women is minuscule. During the nineteenth century, most of the women were confined within their homes and could not get enough opportunity to interact with the outside world. Men, on the other hand, got influenced by the developments around them and hence adopted to western clothing. This shows that women had inferior status in the society at that time.

In 19th century, Indian men switched over to more convenient western clothing but women were obliged to continue wearing traditional Indian dresses because they were bounded by traditions, customs and social values of India. India society was a patriarchal society or a male dominated society and women's were supposed to upload the family honour and wear traditional clothes. This implies that the woman's were considered inferior to men in Indian society.

This happened only in the upper echelons of the society. Some reasons for this were -

1. In the 19th century, Indian women were confined to the four walls as the purdah system was prevalent. They were required to put on traditional dresses.

2. The position of women in the society was very low. Most of them were uneducated and did not have any knowledge. Therefore, there was no need to change their clothing styles.

3. On the other hand women's of the upper class were educated and the adopted all the western habits like western clothes.
