What are Conventional Sources of Energy?

Conventional sources of energy can be described as non-renewable sources of energy that have been used since a long time.Conventional sources of energy are used extensively by mankind and the magnitude of usage is so high that the reserves have got depleted to a great extent.
But at the same time, it has become very difficult to discover and use their new deposits. It is now feared that the known deposits of petroleum in our country will get exhausted very soon, probably in a few decades and coal reserves will only last for another hundred years.

Conventional sources of energy have been in use for a long time. Example: petroleum, coal, water power and natural gases.

They also lead to pollution as they emit smoke and ash when they are used.

They are high-maintenance and expensive.

The preservation cost is very high as they need to be stored and then converted because they are sent through transmission lines and grid.

Types of Conventional Sources of Energy

Fossil Fuels

Did you know that in ancient times, wood was the most commonly used source of heat energy? The energy of wind and flowing water was also used for some activities. Fossil fuels include coal, petroleum and natural gas, hydro energy, nuclear energy and wind energy.
In these modern times, nuclear power is one of the most important forms of energy that has given power to many countries of the world. Scientists have also recognized that the source of energy lies within the atoms of diverse substances — or in the nuclear part of the atoms —therefore it is known as atomic or nuclear energy. Yield is directly related to metals like uranium, radium, thorium, lithium, plutonium etc. in this type of energy.
The abuse of coal as a source of energy has eventually made the industrial revolution possible. The growing industrialization has also created a better quality of life all over the world and caused the global demand for energy to grow at a marvelous rate. The growing energy demand has been largely met by the fossil fuels – coal and petroleum. Humans developed technologies to use these energy sources; however, these fuels were created over millions of years ago and there are only limited reserves. The fossil fuels are non-renewable sources of energy, so it’s crucial to conserve them. If we continue to consume them at such alarming rates, we would soon exhaust all the energy!
There are other disadvantages of burning fossil fuels too. The oxides released like carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur on burning fossil fuels are acidic oxides. They can cause acid rains that affect our water and soil resources. The pollution that happens by burning fossil fuels can be controlled by increasing the efficiency of the combustion techniques and using various processes to reduce the escape of harmful gases and ashes into the surroundings.

Thermal Power Plants

A huge amount of fossil fuels get burnt every day in power stations so that water is heated up to produce steam that further runs the turbine to generate electricity. The transmission process of electricity is more resourceful than transporting coal or petroleum over the same distance. So, there are many thermal power plants that are set up near coal or oil fields. The term ‘thermal power plant’ has been used since the time fuel is getting burnt to create heat energy that is eventually converted into electrical energy.

Hydro Power Plants

The kinetic energy of flowing water or the latent energy of water at a height is yet another traditional source of energy. Hydropower plants convert the potential energy of falling water into electricity. As there aren’t many waterfalls that can be used as a source of potential energy, hydropower plants are generally associated with dams. So, a large number of dams were built all over the world in the last century.
For producing hydel electricity, high-rise dams have been constructed on the river to block the flow of water and thus collect water in larger reservoirs.
