Reflex action

This are involuntary and almost instantaneous movements of organs or body parts in response to a stimuli. Reflex actions are meant to protect the body from harm. These reflexes take place without the conscious thought.

Examples of reflexes of the human body

i) Sucking reflex in infants

ii) Withdrawal reflex

iii) Pupillary  light reflex

iv) Grasp reflex in infants

v) Sneezing

vi) Cough reflex

vii) Golgi tendon reflex

viii) Stretch reflex

ix) Ankle reflex

x) Muscular defense reflex

xi) Startle reflex

Similarity in the reflex actions

All the reflex actions occur involuntarily without the involvement of the conscious thought ( that is our brain).

For this to happen, reflex action make uses of reflex arcs. Reflex arcs are made up of motor neurons, sensory neurons and synapses located within the spinal cord connecting the two.

This arrangement allows for stimuli, carried by neurotransmitters, to be interpreted and effected in the spinal cord activating  the motor neuron without involving the brain.

The reflex arc ensures that the reflex actions occur faster and almost instantaneously.

hope it helps you
