Unorganised sector covers about half of the GDP of our country. This preponderance ofunorganised workers occupies almost 90% of the national labor force. This sector ischaracterized by seasonal employment (in agricultural sector), contractual work, no socialsecurity and welfare legislations, no rights and minimum wages. Lack of skill andeducation, few new openings in organized sector, unawareness of legal rights, deficientwork quality and terms of service draws the labor into the available vortex of theunorganised sector. Here they face problems like poor health conditions, substandardworking life, harassment at work, inadequate and unequal wage structure, long workinghours, poor housing facilities, lack of safety measures, atrocities on women workers andno proper education for children of workers. Government intervention in taking necessarysteps at the legal and policy level for unorganised workers is required for improving theirworking and living conditions. In the present paper the researcher tries to make anattempt to understand the research related to the working and living conditions ofworkers in the unorganised sector and identify the gaps for further research.
