Proteins are large and complex molecules and are made up of amino acids which are linked together by peptide bonds.
Explanation:
- Amino acid is the building block of proteins. There are 20 amino acids which are naturally present in the human body. A carbon atom in the middle of the molecule surrounded by three chemical groups make an amino acid. In all amino acids, two of the chemical groups remains the same with a carboxyl group and an amino group.
- The third group denoted as R differentiates the amino acids and the R group may be a single hydrogen atom or a double-ring structure. The interplay of amino acids in proteins are affected by these chemical differences in the R groups. Proteins assume a lot of conformations due to factors such as hydrophobic interaction, hydrogen bonds, covalent bonds, etc., and carry out several enzymatic reactions.
- Carbohydrates are macronutrients which are not complex. Repeating units of same monomer or dimer constitutes carbohydrates and are classified as simple and complex carbohydrates. Carbohydrates do not carry out enzymatic reactions.
- Hence, proteins are of many different types than carbohydrates.
