Question :-

Sulphonation of phenol at room temperature

required answer :-

Phenol on sulphonation gives either o-phenol sulphonic acid or p-phenol sulphonic acid. It depends on temperature. At room temperature (298 K), o-phenol sulphonic acid is obtained. At 373 K, p-phenol sulphonic acid is obtained.

Sulphonation of phenol at room temperature give.

  • When phenol is sulphonated, one of two phenol sulphonic acids is produced: o- or p-phenol sulphonic acid. Temperature is a factor. You may make o-phenol sulphonic acid at room temperature (298 K). P-phenol sulphonic acid is produced at 373 K.
  • Depending on the temperature, phenol sulphonates easily to produce either the ortho or para isomer. High-temperature sulphonation of phenol results primarily in the para isomer, or 4-phenol sulphonic acid.
  • The operation temperature affects the sulphonation product. Phenol interacts with the concentrated H2SO4 at a low temperature to create o-phenol sulphonic acid. The nearby SO3H group and OH group engage in interaction at low temperatures. Ortho isomers hence dominate.
  • By adding sulphur trioxide and fuming sulfuric acid, the reversible reaction known as sulfonation creates benzenesulfonic acid. By mixing hot aqueous acid with benzenesulfonic acid, the reaction can be reversed to get benzene.
