Sulphur and Phosphorus exhibit multiple valencies. Find the valency of Sulphur and Phosphorus in the following compounds:

The valency of oxygen is 2. Since there are two oxygen atoms in sulphur dioxide, this means that the valency of sulphur in SO2 must be 4. Thus the valency of sulphur in SO2 is 4 while that in SO3 is 6. Phosphorous shows two valencies- 3 and 5.
