When a dilute acid reacts with carbonate/bicarbonate salt,

A salt is formed, water is formed, and carbon dioxide gas evolves.

Hence, when sulphuric acid reacts with calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate is formed, water is formed, and brisk effervescence takes place because carbon dioxide gas is evolved.

Reaction:
CaCO₃ + H₂SO₄ ------> CaSO₄ + H₂O + CO₂
