let the smaller number be x

let the greater number be y

∴according to first given condition

y + x = 35          i

∴according to 2nd given condition

y - x = 13           ii

Add i and ii

 y + x = 35

+y - x  = 13

= 2y = 48

=   y = 48/2

=   y = 24

Substituting y = 24 in i

= 24 + x = 35

= x = 35-24

= x = 11

∴ the smaller number is 11

∴ the greater number is 24
