Let the present age of father be x years.
Then, the present age of son will be ( x - 40 ) years.

After 5 years ,

Father's age = ( x + 5 ) years

Son's age = x - 40 + 5 = ( x - 35 ) years

Ratio of their ages = 7 : 5

 \frac {( x + 5)} { ( x - 35 )} =  \frac{7} {5}

5 ( x + 5) = 7 ( x - 35 )

5x + 25 = 7x - 245

245 + 25 = 7x - 5x

2x = 270

x =  \frac { 270}{2}

x = 135 years.

Father's present age = 135 years.

Son's present age = 135 - 40 = 95 years.
