let the age of father be x and son be y

Now,the sum of their ages is 40

i.e. x+y=40....(i)

again.fathers age is 3 times that of his son

x=3y...(i)

x+y=40

x=40-y

putting the value of x in eqn ii

40-y=3y

y=10years

sons age is 10 yrs,

where fathers age is 3*10=30 years
