let manish age be x

and savitha age be y

x + y = 31 [ from (1) ]..........(3)

three years ago ,

from [2]

( x - 3 ) = 4( y - 3 )

x - 3 = 4y - 12

transposing

x - 4y = -9..........(4)

subtracting (4) from(3)

x - 4y = -9

-x - y = -31 { when we subtract signs change }

x and - x cancels out and adding them we get

-5y = -40

=> y = 40/5 = 8

x = 31 - 8 = 23

therefore ,

manish age = 23yrs

savithas age = 8yrs
