Sum of present ages of Ammu and Pawan is 31 Ammu as age 3 years ago was 4 times age of Pawan .find their present ages​ ?​

Let the present ages of Ammu and Pawan be x years and y years respectively.

  According to the first condition,

  x + y = 31 …

(i)  3 years ago,  Ammu's age = (x – 3) years  Pawan’s age = (y – 3) years

According to the second condition

,  (x – 3) = 4 (y – 3) 

∴ x – 3 = 4y – 12 

∴ x – 4y = -12 + 3

  ∴ x – 4y = -9 …(2)

ii)  Subtracting equation

(i), we get ∴ x = 31 – 8  ∴ x = 23 

The present ages of Ammu and Pawan are 23 years and 8 years respectively

Note:-

The age of Pawan will be equal to (y-3) years. We are given that Ammu's age 3 years ago was 4 times the age of Pawan. So we can say that (x-3) was 4 times (y-3).
