Answer:-

Son age = 10 years

Father age = 30 years

Given :-

Sum of ages of father and son is 40 years.

Father age is 3 times the son age.

To find :-

The age of father and son.

Solution:-

Let the age of father and son be x and y years respectively.

A/Q.

 x + y = 40 ----1

 x = 3y ------2

Put the value of x in eq.1

 3y + y = 40

 4y = 40

 y = \dfrac{40}{4}

 y = 10 years

Now, put the value of y in eq. 2

 x = 3y

 x = 3\times 10

 x = 30 years

hence, The age of father is 30 years and that of son is 10 years.
