Let the son's age be x years
father's age will be 40 - x years
a/q ;
40 - x = 3 x
or, 40 = 4 x
so, x = 40/4 = 10 years ( son's age )
father's age = 40 - 10 = 30 years
father's age will be 40 - x years
a/q ;
40 - x = 3 x
or, 40 = 4 x
so, x = 40/4 = 10 years ( son's age )
father's age = 40 - 10 = 30 years

hiii!!!
here's ur answer...
given that the sum of the age of father and his son is 40 years and father's age is 3 times that of his son's age.
let the age of the son be x.
therefore age of the father is 3x
==> x + 3x = 40 yrs
==> 4x = 40 yrs
==> x = 40/4
==> x = 10 yrs
hence, age of the son = x = 10 yrs
and age of the father = 3x = 3 × 10 = 30 yrs
hope this helps...!!
