Let , the age of son be x

Then , the age of father be 3x

Therefore ,

x + 3x = 40 [ °•° The sum of their ages is 40 ]

4x = 40

x = 40 / 4

x = 10

•°• The age of son is 10 years

And the age of father is ( 3 × 10 ) = 30 years

let father age be x

and son age be y

x+y=40-------eq(1)

from second condition

y=3x

3x-y=0----------(2)

add eq(1)&(2)

we get,

4x=40

x=10

put x=10 in(1)

10+y=40

y=30
