Let x = son’s age

3x = father’s age

Equation: 3x + x = 40

4x = 40

x = 10

Therefore, the son is 10 years old while the father is 3(10) = 30 years old.

Let the age of the son be x. Then,
x +3x=40
4x=40
x=40=÷4=10
The age of son is 10. His father is 3 times his age.
His father age is=10×3=30
