EXPLANATION.

Let the age of father be = x years.

Let the age of his son be = y years.

sum of ages of father and his son = 60

=> x + y = 60 ......(1)

after 14 years,

present age of father = ( x + 14 ) years.

present age of his son = ( y + 14 ) years.

father age will be three times the age

of the son.

=> 3 ( y + 14 ) = ( x + 14 )

=> 3y + 42 = x + 14

=> x - 3y = 28 .....(2)

From equation (1) and (2) we get,

=> x + y = 60 ..... (1)

=> x - 3y = 28 .....(2)

multiply equation (1) by 3

multiply equation (2) by 1

we get,

=> 3x + 3y = 180

=> x - 3y = 28

=> 4x = 208

=> x = 52

put the value of x = 52 in equation (1)

we get,

=> 52 + y = 60

=> y = 8

Therefore,

age of father = x = 52 years.

age of his son = y = 8 years.
