x² + y² = 850 ------1

4x - 4y = 40

x - y = 10

x = 10 + y

sub x = 10 + y in 1

(10 + y)² + y² = 850

100 + 20y + y² + y² = 850

2y² +20y + 100 - 850 = 0

2y² + 20y - 750 = 0

y² + 10y - 375 = 0

(y - 15) ( y + 25) = 0

y = 15                 ( y can't be negative )

x = 10 + y

  = 10 + 15

x = 25

∴ the sides of the squares are 25cm and 15 cm
