Let us assume, x and y are the numerator and denominator of a fraction x/y

Given:

x + y = 12 --------------1

Also given:

x / (y + 3) = 1/2

2x = y + 3

2x – y = 3 ------------------2

Multiply equation 1 by 2

2x + 2y = 24 ----------------3

Subtract eqn 2 from eqn 3

3y = 21

y = 7

Therefore, x = 12 – y = 12 – 7 = 5

Therefore, original fraction = x/y = 5/7
