Their ages after five years are 16 and 17

Step-by-step explanation:

let the present ages of two friends be x and y

A/Q

 x+y=23......eq(1)

Five years ago

there ages was (x-5) and (y-5)

and according to question we have

   (x-5)(y-5)=42...eq(2)

subtituting the value of y from eq(1) to eq(2) we get

  =>(x-5)(23-x-5)=42\\=>(x-5)(18-x)=42\\=>-x^2+23x-90=42\\=>x^2-23x+132=0\\=>x^2-12x-11x+132=0\\=>(x-11)(x-12)=0\\=>x=11,12

∴ y = 12,11 from eq(1)

Hence thier ages after five years are (11+5) and (12+5)

i.s, 16 and 17
