Since the "proper" way of doing it (Triangle inequality) has already been explained, let's go for a bit more intuitive answer. So in a quadrilateral(say, ABCD), the line joining any two vertexes is always the shortest path. ... The sum of any two sides of a triangle is always grater than the third side
