Let the second number = y

According to question :

8x = y + 9

x = y + 9 / 8 ...(1)

Now x + y = 108 ...(2)

put the value of x in equation (2)

y + 9 / 8 + y = 108

y + 9 + 8y / 8 = 108

y + 9 + 8y = 108 × 8

9y + 9 = 864

9y = 864 - 9

9y = 855

y = 855 / 9

y = 95

put the value of y in equation (1)

x = 95 + 9 / 8

x = 95 + 9 / 8

x = 104 / 8

x = 13

The first number = x = 13

The second number = y = 95
