Let the numbers be x and y

Case 1

x + y = 23

x=23-y ....(i)

Case 2

x - y = 12 ....(ii)

or

y - x = 12.....(iii)

put value of x in eqn ii)

23-y-y = 12

-2y = -11

y = 11/2 or 5.5

put y=11/2 in eqn i)

x=23 - 11/2

x=46-11 /2

x=35/2 or 17.5

Put value of x in eqn iii)

y-(23-y)=12

y-23+y=12

since y will be cutted off in this condition...

Thus value of x=17.5 and y=5.5
