SOLUTION

GIVEN

  • Sum of two numbers is 26

  • Their difference is 2

TO DETERMINE

  • Taking two numbers as x and y write two expressions for the statement given above.

  • Find the number X and y

EVALUATION

Let the numbers are x and y

FIND FOR EQUATION

Now it is given that Sum of two numbers is 26

So

 \sf{x + y = 26 \:  \:  \:  \:  \: .....(1) \: }

Again it is given that Their difference is 2

So

 \sf {x - y = 2 \: } \:  \:  \: ....(2)

Hence two equations in x and y are

 \sf{x + y = 26 \: }

 \sf{x  -  y = 2 \: }

SOLVE FOR x and y

Adding Equation (1) & Equation (2) we get

 \sf{2x = 28\: }

 \implies \sf{x = 14}

From Equation (1) we get

 \sf{y = 26 - 14 \: }

 \implies \sf{y = 12}

Hence the two numbers are 14 and 12
