HEY MATE YOUR ANSWER IS HERE ^_^

LET NUMBERS BE X & Y, THEN

X + Y = 40_____(1)

X² - Y² = 400

(X+Y)(X-Y) = 400

X - Y = 10_____(2)

BY ADDING (1) & (2)

2X = 50

X = 25 & Y = 15

Answer:

10

Explanation:

Let us consider,

First number =x and

Second number =y

(Assume y is smaller)

As per the statement,

x+y=40---------(1)

and x^{2} -y^{2}=400

(x+y)(x-y)=400

40(x-y)=400

x-y=10----------(2)

solve eqn 1&2 we get

             x+y=40

            x-y=10

           2y=30

=>y=15

x=x+15=40

=>x=25
