Let the first number be x

second number be (x+10) // one exceed other by 10 //

sum of the number is  given by x+(x+10) = 40

x+x+10=40

2x+10 = 40

2x =40-10

2x = 30

x=30/2

x=15

first number x=15, second number x+10 = 15+10= 25

The numbers are 15 and 25.
