Sum of two numbers is 42 and their difference is 8 . Find the numbers ?

Proof:'

assume that two numbers are a , b

a + b = 42

a - b = 8

add both equations

2a = 50

a = 25

substitute in 1st equation

25 + b = 42

b = 17
