Given : -

  • Sum of two numbers is 85. If one exceeds the other by 15, find first number.

To find : -

  • First number

Solution : -

Let the first number be x then second number be (x + 15)

  • Sum of two number = 85

According to the question

→ x + (x + 15) = 85

→ x + x + 15 = 85

→ 2x + 15 = 85

→ 2x = 85 - 15

→ 2x = 70

→ x = 70/2 = 35

Hence,

  • First number = x = 35
  • Second number = x + 15 = 50

{\green{\underline{\underline{\bold{Solution:-}}}}}

Let the first number be ' x '

Given, one number exceeds the other by 15

The second number = (x + 15)

According to the question:-

(x + 15) + x = 85 \\ \\ \implies x + 15 + x = 85 \\ \\ \implies 2x + 15 = 85 \\ \\ \implies2x = 85 - 15 \\ \\ \implies2x = 70 \\ \\ \implies x = \frac{70}{2} \\ \\ \implies x = 35
