a+b=-b/a

therefore

a+b=-(-4)/2=2

swaroopaditya595: When someone talks about the roots of an eqn ,it simply means the points on which this function is is giving 0 . So ,1 easy proof can be just draw the graph . Wherever it will cut x axis (at 2 diff points) just add those integers (in this case). And you'll get the sum of roots which is equal to -b/a. Here its 4.
