Answer:

The cost of potatoes after 20% increase in price this month is Rs. 12.5 .

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that :

  • Monthly expenditure on potatoes = Rs. 1500
  • Due to 20% rise in prices, Suman buys 30 lg fewer potatoes

To find :

  • Present cost of potatoes

Solution :

  • Let, the present cost of potatoes after 20% rise in price this month be Rs. x. Then, cost of potatoes previous month is

x - x \frac{20}{100}  =  \frac{80}{100} x = 0.8x

  • If previous month consumption of potatoes be y kg. Then

0.8xy = 1500 \\ or \:  \:  \: xy =  \frac{1500}{0.8}  = 1875

  • Presently, this month potatoes consumption is reduced by 30 kg due to increase in price.

x(y - 30) = 1500 \\ xy - 30x = 1500 \\ 30x = xy - 1500 \\ putting \: value \: of \: xy \: we \: get \\ 30x = 1875 - 1500 \\ 30x = 375 \\ x =  \frac{375}{30}  = 12.5

  • Hence, presently the cost of potatoes after 20% increase in price is Rs. 12.5 .
