In the poem 'Exactly Right' Laura Arlon tells about the confusion experienced by a child who is growing. The poet expresses the doubts, fears and disappointments of the child.
His parents or relatives say that he is too young to cross the street and go to play. They tell him that he is old enough to understand that he should not cry when things are not done the way he wants. They say that he is too big to swing on the garden gate but he is too small to stay awake after eight at night.
The child is confused because he is considered young and old, big and small. He wonders whether he will ever be able to grow up, in age and height, to conform to the way which is considered exactly correct.
