This is a very beautiful poem by the pen of Sarojini Naidu . This poem was written in the times when India was under British rule.
..In the first stanza the poet sees in the bazaars of Hyderabad ,merchandise attractively displayed. She asks the merchants what are the selling .The reply is that they are selling crimson and silver turbans ,purple brocade tunics ,mirror framed in amber and daggers with handles of jade.
Second stanza:
At another stall the poet asks the vendors what are they selling and weighing .They tell her that they are selling saffron,lentil and rice. She questions the maidens what they are grinding .The reply is : sandalwood,henna and spices. Then she asks the pedlars what they are selling and they tell her that they are selling chessmen and dice made of ivory.
Stanza 3 :
the poet enquires the goldsmiths what ornaments they make .They reply her saying that they are making wristlets,anklets,and rings. they also make griddles for making sword in .
4 th stanza:
the poet enquires from the fruit sellers and they answered that they are selling lemons ,pomegranate and plum.she asks musicians as well they replied that they play sitar ,sarangi and drums .When she asks musicians that what are they chanting they replied that they are chanting magical spells to charm all the ages to come.
5 th stanza :
The poet asks the flower girls what they are selling they replied that they are weaving with strands of blue and red colours .they say they are weaving garlands for bridegroom and garlands to decorate.
