Answer:
The Call of the Wild
In Jack London's The Call of the Wild, we follow Buck, a strong dog who becomes the leader of a dogsled team in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. He spent his younger years at a comfortable home in California but was kidnapped because people paid a lot of money for dogs like him. Life is not easy for Buck as he moves from master to master.
In Chapter 5, Buck pulls a sled for Hal and Charles, who are clueless about traveling with dogs; they do not bring enough food, and some dogs die. When they stop at a camp and meet a man named John Thornton, Buck decides he will not go on with the group. Hal beats him badly, but John Thornton saves Buck. It was a good thing that Buck didn't go with Hal and Charles: as Buck's old team goes across some thin ice, the sled falls into the water with everyone on it.
