Democracy has long become a hollow term. For many, it symbolizes little more than party politics, supplemented by occasional trips to the voting booth. More often than not, it is also associated with a capitalist, and increasingly neo liberal, set of economic policies, which benefit the few and hurt the many.
The Arab Spring represents a plea for a radical reform of these approaches to democratic government. In its will to action and focus on “Bread, Freedom, and Dignity”34 the region’s revolutions represent a desire for a more participatory form of democracy in which political rights are intimately connected to economic opportunities and social justice.
