- He's so uncommon that none of them have ever seen him, nobody but a native. The author met a great number of tourists who saw people who saw him, but never a tourist who saw the skun with his eyes. The skunk highly talented, as well as being rare.
- The author states that they heard hydrophobic skunk for the first time the down Hermit trail. The informal visitor first takes the rim drive; then he writes Bright Ângel Trail, which is sufficiently frightening to him, until he gets used to it and then he becomes more adventurous and departs from Hermit Trail, which is a magnificent corkscrew twist, gimping through this red abdominal wound of a canyon into the world's epic gizzard.
- Johnny, a cow-puncher and one the the Canyon guides. He accompanied the author and his friends who wanted to see the hydrophobic skunk and went on trotting like a mule, hearing the unwritten annals of the range from one who had seen them enacted at first hand.

Bill was in charge of the camp, where the author, his friend and Johhny stayed. while staying in the tent Johnny and Bill narrated stories about the skunk. What he thought ws a hydrophobic skunk, was a pack rat, sometimes called a trade rat, paying them a visit. The pack rat was also a denizen of the Grand Canyon. - Towards the end, at breakfast the next morning, Bill and Johnny were doing a lot of laughing between them over something or other. it looked as though they were enjoying having fooled the author and his friend about the hydrophobic skunk
