The Gift of the Magi Summary

"The Gift of the Magi" is a 1905 short story by O. Henry about Jim and Della, an impoverished young couple who make sacrifices in order to buy each other meaningful Christmas gifts.

Della sells her beautiful hair in order to buy a nice watch chain for Jim’s beloved heirloom watch.

When Jim comes home, he reveals that he has sold his watch to buy lovely combs for Della's hair.

Though Della and Jim’s respective sacrifices have rendered their gifts functionally useless, they maintain their good humor and decide to save the fine gifts for a later time.

"The Cowardly Lion and therefore the Hungry Tiger" is a story by L. Baum.

The story begins at the palace of the Emerald City, where princess Ozma lives, in the middle of the land of Oz. The lion and therefore the tiger take care of the princess, however, nobody ever attacks her or threatens her, as she is loved by everyone. this suggests that both the lion and the tiger are very bored with their lives and do not feel respected.

This leads them to speak and they decide that they will attack someone just to prove that they should be feared. The tiger decides he wants to eat a baby and therefore the lion decides he wants to tear a person to pieces.

Both cats leave the palace and wander around the streets until they hear a baby crying. As they turn the corner, they see a baby on its own. The tiger goes over to him but doesn't eat him. Instead, he protects it. The mother sees this and runs towards the baby, but falls. The lion then helps the lady up.

Seeing how good they're, the lady thanks them. they are going back to the palace and discussing what happened. Although they're both embarrassed by their inability to be scary, they conclude that it's better to be cowardly than to be evil, and to be hungry than to be cruel.
