‘The Hydrophobic Skunk’ is a humorous short story by Irvin S. Cobb.
Narrated in first person view, the story is about how local tourist guides at Grand Canyon and fools tourists into believing a made-up story about hydrophobic skunks.
At the beginning of the story, the author describes the hydrophobic skunks in detail and thus, makes the reader actually believe that such creatures exist before delving into the story in detail.
The hydrophobic skunk is described as a skunk which is always mad and thus, is more dangerous than a regular skunk.
But the claim by the author that these skunks are only seen by natives is indicative of the idea these creatures are probably a figment of the natives’ imaginations.
Then the story goes into detail about the Grand Canyon Trail, the local guides Bill and Johnny, and the night camp.
After the hearty dinner served by the guides, they gather around for a night chat and the guides scare the tourists about the hydrophobic skunks.
They go into detail about how they attack humans and bite them.
They also further scare the tourists by telling them that the skunks like to snuggle with humans at nights and sneak into the camps too.
Once the scared tourists retire to bed, around half past one, the narrator wakes up to a shuffling sound.
She immediately climbs up the side of the camp, in fear, thinking that the sound is that of a hydrophobic skunk.
But when Bill enters with a dim light, they find out that it is actually a pack rat and that the skunk story is fabricated.
