SUMMARY

The lesson “Learning the Game” deals with Sachin’s introduction to the game of

cricket. He was an eleven year old boy. He used to watch cricket on television.

Sachin had a humble beginning with his colony friends at Bandra in his hometown.

He often tried to imitate the great cricket players of that time. He was studying in

the New English School, Mumbai. At the age of eleven, his kind and loving

brother `Ajith took him to Achrekar, a famed cricket coach. He was a leading a

school cricket coach at that time. Sachin was not comfortable to bat before a big

crowd. He was shy and nervous so he could not impress the coach with his batting.

But Ajith asked the coach to watch him from a long distance. So Achrekar sir

could identify his promising talents. He readily agreed to train him. It was a great

opportunity for him to learn the basic skill of batting. His training was rigorous and

intensive. The camp was every morning and evening at Sivaji park. He never

compromised with his training session. His coaching made him a renowned

cricket player.

Sachin had to change his present school. Achrekar was available in Shardashram

School. So his parents permitted him to change school for his interest of cricket.

Achrekar was a committed coach and devoted his time for cricket. He had takencoaching seriously. Achrekar never allowed him to bunk the practice sessions. He was being punished for any lapses. Sheer hard work and fair play were the winning formula of his astounding success in cricket. His father was a great source of energy. His father was always supportive. He would buy a special fruit cocktail when they go home after the training. He stopped this practice as he found it was unreasonable. He had only one set of cricket cloth

to wear during summer camp. He struggled a lot to reach at the camp during the peak time. Travelling to Sivaji park took forty minutes. There was a huge traffic in the evening. He had experienced a lot of hardship to reach there in time.
