The poem If by Rudyard Kipling is one of contradicting instructions. It is a poem of instructions on how to lead a good, virtuous and righteous life. It states that if you are able to maintain your self-confidence no matter the circumstances, then success will be yours.  

He extols the virtues of honesty, patience, the strength of character, the ability to see what’s right and what’s wrong and to walk the right path under any circumstances. The entire poem is based on the dualism of two contradicting characters and how despite this one can find success by exercising self-control.
