The Tsunami is a lesson based on Geography and aims at making us aware about a natural occurrence called tsunami. A tsunami is a very large and powerful wave caused by earthquakes under the sea. On 26 December 2004, a tsunami hit Thailand and parts of India such as the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and the Tamil Nadu coast. It presents some stories of courage and survival. It also brings out the fact that animals have a sixth sense which help them to foresee the oncoming disaster.

Ignesious, an inhabitant of Katchall in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands lost his wife and two children, who were swept away by the giant waves rising from the sea.

Sanjeev, a policeman lost his life trying to save his cook’s wife.

A thirteen-year-old girl Meghna was miraculously saved after spending two days floating in the sea, holding on to a wooden door. Almas Javed, a ten year- old girl lost her whole family to the tsunami. Although she survived, she is extremely traumatized by the incident.

There are many stories which say that wild and domestic animals could sense and know when the earth is going to shake. Their acute sense of hearing helps them to sense and feel the earth’s vibrations. Therefore, the animals could sense the approaching disaster and flee to safer grounds. Fewer animals lost their lives as compared to humans during the calamity.
