Summary
- The poem ‘Wind’ composed by Subramania Bharati and translated by A.K. Ramanujan is a beautiful poem that describes the might of wind.
- The poem opens with a request to the wind to come softly and not to break the windows and not to scatter the papers. Personifying the wind, the poet tells it not to throw down books from the shelf.
- The poet draws the attention of the wind to the papers that it has torn and the rain that it has brought. He says that the wind makes fun of the weaklings and crumbles and crushes weak houses, doors, rafters, wood, bodies, lives, and hearts. The wind God just does what it likes.
- In the last stanza, the poet suggests that we should all try to build strong homes, doors, bodies, and steadfast (unwavering) hearts; if we become strong the wind will befriend us. The wind supports the strong but extinguishes weak fires. The friendship of wind is good. And we should praise the wind God every day.
