There’s almost no answer to this question that won’t have its detractors and critics. World history books, especially those driven by narratives, are notoriously prone to generalizations and trying to synthesize historical processes into one sweeping and concise overview. That being said: Toynbee’s “A study of history” and Braudel’s “Civilization and Capitalism” volumes. More recent work might be Osterhammel’s “Tranformation of the World” but that’s solely concerned with the 19th century and the beginnings of globalization.
