In the poem ""A night with a wolf" written by Bayard Taylor, the poet tells a story to a child and in return asks affection from him. The poet calls the child to sit on his lap and listen to one of the stories. He asks the child to give him a kiss after listening to the story. The night was stormy and the heavy rain was pouring. The poet started to tell the story of his encounter with a wolf on a night similar to that. When the poet was a small child he was lost in the mountains where no humans can be seen. The tribal who lived in the mountains were yet very dangerous as they would rob the passengers and the child also feared the carnivores present there. The poet saw a wolf in that dark night and he asked the child sitting on his lap not to fear of the wolf. Both the poet and the wolf were searching for a proper shelter on that stormy night. The poet and the wolf with mutual understanding became a companion and gave warmth to each other in order to save both of them from the harsh weather. At the time when the wind and the rain stopped, both of them returned back to their respective homes. In this way, with mutual understanding, both of them remained safe. At the end of the story, the poet asks the child to fulfill his promise of kissing him.
