'A poem for mother' is a heart touching autobiographical poem by the Manipuri poet Robin S Ngangom.

EXPLANATION:

The poem summarises the role of a mother not just the poet's but the universal mother.

The poet begins the poem by addressing his own mother Palem Apokpi. He says that she had given birth to a shy boy who hated to leave his home ten years ago. Although the poet has grown old he is still the mischievous son he used to be. He fondly recollects how he used to steal food from his mother's kitchen for which he lost all his milk teeth. The trouble he gave to his mother when he was at school romancing all the girls he came across although he wasn't fully grown then.

The poet remembers his mother's assertion that time and money didn't grow on trees they had to be properly kept even though the author failed to do so.

The poet also remembers the endless toil of his mother and all other mothers who get up early in the morning and worked selflessly for their family. Going to the market, stooping under the load, cooking tirelessly for her family, worrying about each family member's welfare be they her aged husband, unmarried sons or liberated daughters -in-law.

Mother wakes up in the wee hours of the morning, goes to the temple, prays for everyone and starts to work. Unfortunately her poet son has not inherited anything from. He can neither cook like her nor keep the house. He has grown to be a very small human being with little money and not worth remembering.
