After maggie's mothers funeral everyone starts to go back to their house and leave Maggie all alone while Joe Thompson, a wheel right stays. Joe Thompson was a kind hearted person and he takes Maggie to his home.
He thought that he would keep Maggie there for one night and then he would send her to the poor house. He and his wife had no kids.
His wife is angry when she sees Maggie in Joe Thomson's arms and asks him why he has brought that sick brat to her home. Joe mentions of the children in the Bible and tries to convince his wife to keep Maggie in for a day and then he would make arrangements to send Maggie to the poor house.
While Joe is out for work Mrs Thompson spends the day with Maggie and grows very fond of her and begins to love her.
The Thompsons end up keeping Maggie forever.
