On the outset Helen Keller expresses her fear at writing the history of her life. She does not want to make her childhood known to all. She finds the task of writing an autobiography a difficult one. She feels that her life is neither a miracle nor a joke. She presents only the important and interesting episodes of her life.

She was born on June 27, 1880 in Tuscumbia into a well connected family. Her father, Author H. Keller was a captain in the confederate army. He was related to Robest E. Lee. Her mother Kate Adams belonged to an intellectual family.
