The summary of chapter 1
The portrait of a lady.
Once,A grandmother and her grandchild(narrator)used to live in a village in Punjab. They loved each other . The narrator used to wonder that his grandmother was pretty at a time , but he realised that her silver locks and her white spotless saree are also beautiful.
The narrator used to go to temple with her grandmother to study while her grandmother used to chant prayers.
The Narrator moved to city with her grandmother, and started to study in a good private school. The grandmother was highly disappointed as in village they used to go to temple together but now , they are not close. She was also disappointed as the narrator's study was in English medium and now she can't help her grandchild .
She started feeding sparrows to pass her time. As the time passed, narrator went to abroad to study further but this disappointed the grandmother more. In the end, the narrator came from abroad . The grandmother was more old , but she gathered neighborhood women and started singing the song of homecoming warriors.
Later, she closed the door of her room and said that her end is near.
Finally, she died and the sparrows gathered around her and stood in silence .
