A prosperous lawyer (Sergei) encounters a ragged beggar, who claims to be a teacher fired unjustly from his job. Sergei, however, remembers that he saw the same man the other day, when he had claimed to be an impoverished student. The beggar (Luskoff) breaks down and admits that he is simply a drunk without work. Sergei offers him a job chopping wood, which he reluctantly accepts. Olga, the cook, takes Luskoff out and shows him the wood stack.

After that, Luskoff returns frequently to do odd jobs, and eventually Sergei sets him up with a clerical position. Two years later, Sergei sees the former beggar at the theater. He prides himself for having "saved" Lushkoff from a life of drunkenness, but Lushkoff reveals that it was Olga who saved him--she chopped the wood, and the compassion she showed led to a change in his heart.

Answer:

A lawyer named Sergei meets a beggar named Lushkoff who calls himself a school teacher who has been removed due to some tricks played by his colleagues. He says that he is ashamed of begging but he is forced to do so and swears before God that he is saying truth.

Sergei asked the beggar if they met before to which he says no. Then Sergei starts looking at the beggar and after seeing the beggar's overshoes remembers that he saw the same person at Sodovya Street 3 days before where lushkoff told that he was a student who was rusticated. Sergei gets angry and says that he will complain to police. Lushkoff, then agrees that he was lying and says that he was a singer who was removed because he used to drink. Sergei asks him if he will chop wood and lushkoff agrees. Lushkoff didn't agree because he wanted to work, he agreed because earlier he told that he wanted work and he is not able to get. Sergei takes beggar to his house and asks his cook, Olga, to show him wood shed where the work has to be done. After some time Olga comes and tells that the work is done. Lushkoff is given half a rouble. After that day, the beggar used to come to Sergei's house for work and used to clear snow, clean shed, etc. After some days, Sergei was pleased to see lushkoff changing and sent him to his friend who will give lushkoff a clean job. Sergei advises not to drink and work hard after which lushkoff leaves.

After 2 years, Sergei meets lushkoff at a theatre to find out that he is now a notary and earns 35 roubles a month. Sergei was glad and started telling Lushkoff that he was proud that lushkoff didn't forget his words and that he only transformed the begger into a better man.

Then Lushkoff reveals that it was Olga the cook who helped him. He tells that whenever he came to Sergei's house, Olga used to scold him and used to weep. He says that he never chopped the wood. It was Olga who chopped the wood and says that he is always indebted to her. Saying this he go into gallery.
